The Mamluk carpet design originated in Egypt between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries. What is special are the geometric patterns, the variation in colors (mostly red, green & gray), and the fact that Mamluks are extremely fine and thin. Ziegler Mamluk carpets were manufactured in the late 19th century by the renowned Swiss trading family Ziegler. Due to the political unrest of the Persian Empire and the strong demand for carpets from the West, Ziegler decided to set up his own production in Sultanabad, Pakistan and hire some of the best carpet weavers to meet this growing demand. Our Mamluk carpets are of very high quality and have a knot density of approximately 400.000 knots/m2.
Today, Mamluk carpets stand for exceptional quality and classic, oriental-inspired patterns. The wool used is of high quality and the color palette consisting of natural vegetable dyes is softer and more subtle than that of Persian carpets. The shorter pile makes it easy to keep the carpet clean.
