In Splendor you play a diamond dealer. With diamonds you buy cards (such as mines, shops and means of transport). These cards give prestige and victory points, as well as discounts on the purchase of new cards.

Once you've collected enough cards, you might even be visited by nobles, which will give you even more victory points. Splendor is a very accessible engine-building game with beautifully designed components.
