18th Military Police Brigade - Law Enforcement in Combat

The 18th Military Police Brigade is a military police brigade of the United States Army based in Grafenwoehr, Germany, with subordinate battalions and companies stationed throughout Germany. It provides law enforcement and force protection duties to United States Army Europe.

Activated during the Vietnam War, the Brigade oversaw all Military Police operations in the country for a large portion of the conflict, undertaking a wide variety of missions throughout the country and providing command and control for other military police groups in the region. After Vietnam, the Brigade deployed units to several other operations, namely Operation Desert Storm and Operation Provide Comfort. The brigade itself also deployed to Kosovo, supporting many of the units operating there attempting to settle unrest in the area due to the 1999 Bosnian War.

The brigade has also seen multiple deployments in the Global War on Terrorism to the Iraq War. Its primary responsibilities have been to train and equip the national Iraqi Police forces.

Iraq War Service - Training Iraqi Police

The 18th Military Police Brigade deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom with the critical mission of training and equipping Iraqi Police forces. This mission was essential to establishing security and governance in Iraq, as Iraqi police would ultimately be responsible for maintaining law and order after coalition forces departed.

MP soldiers of the 18th Brigade worked alongside Iraqi police officers, teaching them law enforcement techniques, criminal investigation, use of force, and police procedures. They conducted joint patrols, mentored Iraqi police leaders, and helped establish police stations and command structures throughout Iraq. This mission required patience, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to operate in a combat environment while building relationships with Iraqi partners.

Military Police in Iraq - Multiple Missions

In addition to training Iraqi police, soldiers of the 18th MP Brigade conducted a wide range of military police missions in Iraq. They provided convoy security, conducted detention operations, investigated crimes, provided force protection for bases and facilities, and conducted law enforcement patrols in Iraqi cities and towns.

MP soldiers faced improvised explosive devices (IEDs), small arms fire, and complex attacks while conducting their missions. They demonstrated courage, professionalism, and the ability to adapt to the constantly changing conditions of counterinsurgency warfare. The brigade's soldiers earned Bronze Stars, Purple Hearts, and other awards for their service in Iraq.

Whether you served with the 18th Military Police Brigade in Iraq, are a military police veteran, or appreciate the critical role of military police in Iraq, this mug represents law enforcement excellence, dedication, and the proud legacy of Ever Vigilant in combat.
