This piece had its start in the streets of Santa Fe. I saw a bright red shirt on display outside a shop, laid over a turquoise scarf and adorned with marigold beads. The collection of colors took my breath away. I loved the intensity of the colors against the softness of the storefront’s neutral adobe and tiles. When I showed the painting to a musical friend, she said it made her think of discordant harmony—that sound in music when things don’t quite fit together but sound exactly right. As she described it to me, I heard Mike Garson’s piano solo in David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane. At Bowie’s urging, Garson played the jazz-influenced improvised piano solo in one take against the background of Bowie’s song. The contrast of the two at times clashes and feels unresolved and uncomfortable and then there are moments when everything is smooth and harmonious—and then there’s chaos, and then there’s harmony. Chaos. Harmony. Chaos. Harmony. Back and forth—in a way that reminds me of the up and down drama of a really good novel. “You’ll make it,” is from Bowie’s song and I love that hopeful message in the midst of the ebb and flow from chaos to harmony.
