Historical Background

These notes were issued during the turmoil of the Mexican Revolution. Yucatán’s economy was heavily dependent on henequen (sisal fiber), sometimes called “green gold.” The commission issued paper money backed by the henequen industry to facilitate commerce during a period when regular currency supplies were disrupted.
