Dreaming of the High DesertWhen I arrived in Santa Fe, first thing I did was take a walk around the homestead where I was staying for my Artist Residency. The sky was a brilliant blue that went on for miles up and across, the greens of the firs, junipers, and cedar trees contrasted with the neutral tableau of ochre, oxide, grey, lavender, and sage that covered the ground. This visit was the manifestation of a long held dream to spend time being creative in the high desert.

When I arrived in Santa Fe, first thing I did was take a walk around the homestead where I was staying for my Artist Residency. The sky was a brilliant blue that went on for miles up and across, the greens of the firs, junipers, and cedar trees contrasted with the neutral tableau of ochre, oxide, grey, lavender, and sage that covered the ground. This visit was the manifestation of a long-held dream to spend time being creative in the high desert.
Before traveling West years ago, I didn’t know or understand the beauty of the high desert. I thought it was like a Road Runner cartoon—vast swaths of nothingness with peaks of red rocks and coyotes plotting with anvils. I was astonished when I first arrived in Santa Fe at how beautiful the land was. Traveling through Washington state and Oregon in the last few years, I’ve continued to be in awe of the rugged, neutral colors of the high desert. The high desert opens my mind and my heart to what is new and possible—and leaves me dreaming up new Joys.
